SCANINST.HLP: Help for ScanMan Install
Last edited 9/12/90 by Kevin Mackey
NOTES:
1) Set the right margin to 75 when editing this file so that lines are just
long enough to fit in the help window. Any longer and formatting is bad.
2) Sections 2 and 3 only differ in that section 3 includes a description of
the No Interrupt option.
3) Sections 7, 8, and 9 only differ in the 3rd item.
4) The end-of-file marker must be on its own line.

Pop-up menus (menus that appear to the right of other menus) can be closed
by either pressing ESC or clicking anywhere outside the menu with the
mouse.
Choose Install to copy the ScanMate software to the drive and directory of
your choice. After the software has been copied, you will be asked to set
the configuration values that the scanner will use each time you start your
computer.
Choose Setup if you have already installed the ScanMate software, and you
want to change one or more of the configuration settings.
Choose View README to see the README file, which contains late-breaking
information that may not be available in the manual.
Choose Test Scanner to make sure the scanner is working properly. Choose
this option AFTER you finish the installation or when you change something
through Setup -- and AFTER you have rebooted. Rebooting makes the
configuration setting changes take effect.
SECTION 2
Interrupt Request (IRQ) Information and Advice
The IRQs listed in the interrupt menu are not being used by a device or
program AT THIS TIME. Some devices and programs only `grab' the interrupt
when you start to use them. IRQs used by such products may be shown in the
IRQ menu because they are not being used at this moment. If two devices are
active at the same time using the same IRQ, your system may behave
unpredictably.
SECTION 3
Interrupt Request (IRQ) Information and Advice
The IRQs listed in the interrupt menu are not being used by a device or
program AT THIS TIME. Some devices and programs only `grab' the interrupt
when you start to use them. IRQs used by such products may be shown in the
IRQ menu because they are not being used at this moment. If two devices are
active at the same time using the same IRQ, your system may behave
unpredictably.
If you cannot avoid a conflict, select the `No Interrupts' option. This
selection, however, restricts your use of the scanner in the following
ways:
* Ansel and CatchWord will not work with the scanner.
* Real-time display in PaintShow, Scan, and WScan is disabled
* Scanning into the 2nd page of PaintShow Plus is disabled
* Programs that scan to disk will not work.
This includes several OCR and image editing packages.
SECTION 4
DMA Information and Advice
The Direct Memory Access Channel (DMA) should only be changed from the
default if the scanner test reports a problem. A problem with the DMA means
that data can't be received from the scanner.
SECTION 5
Scanner Test Help: Driver Not Running
The scanner driver is not loaded. A DEVICE line in the CONFIG.SYS file
should load the scanner driver. There are several possible reasons why the
scanner driver is not loaded.
1. Scanner DEVICE line may not be in CONFIG.SYS.
When you choose Install or Setup, a scanner DEVICE line is written to the
CONFIG.SYS file. If you edit or replace CONFIG.SYS, you may have deleted
this line.
SOLUTION: Choose Setup from the main menu and proceed through the Setup
process. MAKE SURE you complete the step where the DEVICE line is added to
CONFIG.SYS.
2. Scanner driver may not be in the directory indicated in CONFIG.SYS.
If the scanner DEVICE line IS in CONFIG.SYS, then the scanner driver may
not be in the directory shown in the DEVICE line.
SOLUTION: Choose Install from the main menu to install the scanner driver
in that directory. Enter the directory when asked.
3. Scanner board address may not be correct.
If the scanner DEVICE line IS in the CONFIG.SYS file, and the scanner
driver IS in the directory shown in the DEVICE line, then there may be a
mismatch between the scanner board address and the address listed in the
scanner DEVICE line.
SOLUTION: Choose Setup from the main menu. After selecting your boot drive,
Setup will inform you if there is a board address mismatch. If there is, it
will be automatically corrected. However, you must proceed through the
setup process for the change to take effect. MAKE SURE the new DEVICE line,
with the correct address, is added to CONFIG.SYS.
SECTION 6
Scanner Test Help: Scanner Not Connected
If the light doesn't turn on in the scanner window, the scanner may not be
connected to the scanner board. Make sure the scanner is securely connected
to the scanner board.
SECTION 7
Scanner Test Help: Interrupt Request Problem
1. You may not have moved the scanner within 20 seconds during the test.
You are given 20 seconds in which to move the scanner. If you haven't moved
it within that time, then the test will fail.
SOLUTION: Try the test again, and press the button and move the scanner
within 20 seconds.
2. Another program or device may be using the scanner's interrupt.
Though an interrupt was available at the time you selected it, another
program or device might have used the same interrupt at a later time. Two
or more devices or programs can't use the same interrupt at the same time.
SOLUTION: Choose Setup from the main menu, choose a different interrupt,
complete the Setup process (making sure the new scanner DEVICE line is
written to the CONFIG.SYS file), then REBOOT and retry the test. Continue
this process until the test is successful or until you have tried all the
interrupts. If you can't find an available interrupt, then try to free one
by de-installing a device or program that is using one. If you can't do
that, then you might be able to use your scanner with the `No Interrupts'
option. Check the README file for more information.
SECTION 8
3. There may be a mismatch between the interrupt jumper settings on the
scanner board and the interrupt setting in the CONFIG.SYS file.
SOLUTION: Choose Setup from the main menu. You will then be shown the
current interrupt setting. Please refer to your ScanMan User's Manual,
Chapter 1, for instructions on setting the interrupt jumper switches on the
scanner board. Make sure the jumper switch settings on the board match the
interrupt value shown in Setup. Turn off your system before you set the
jumper settings.
SECTION 9
3. The scanner may be using 16-bit interrupts, but the board is in an
8-bit slot.
You were given a choice of 16-bit interrupts (interrupts 11 and 12) because
the scanner board can use them. However, you might have installed the board
in an 8-bit slot.
SOLUTION: Choose Setup from the main menu, and see if the scanner is set to
use either interrupt 11 or 12. If it is, quit the setup, turn off your
computer, and check the scanner board to see if it is in an 8-bit slot. If
it is, then move it to a 16-bit slot so you can use interrupt 11 or 12. If
you would rather not move the board, or if there are no 16-bit slots
available, you can choose Setup from the main menu and choose an 8-bit
interrupt (3, 4, 5, 7, or 9) if one is available.
SECTION 10
Scanner Test Help: DMA Conflict
The DMA channel is the path through which the scanner sends data to your
computer. If another device is using the same DMA channel as the scanner,
then data from the scanner can't get to your computer.
SOLUTION: Choose Setup from the main menu, choose a different DMA channel,
complete the Setup process (making sure the new scanner DEVICE line is
written to the CONFIG.SYS file), then REBOOT and retry the test.
SECTION 11
Scanner Type Help
To determine the model of the ScanMan scanner you are using, refer to the
User's Manual that came with your scanner.
SECTION 12
Default Resolution Help
The default resolution is used by the scanner device driver to set the
initial scanner resolution. Make sure it matches the setting of the
resolution switch on the scanner.
SECTION 13
Board Base I/O Address Help
You should change the Board Base I/O Address only when you are instructed
to by this installation program, or when you know there will be an address
conflict with another device. The address setting must match the address of
the board. If you change the address setting, you must change the address
of the board too. Refer to your User's Manual for instructions on changing
the board address.
SECTION 14
Configuration Settings Help
The installation program tries to select settings to match your computer
system. Therefore, you shouldn't need to change the settings. If there is a
conflict, instructions provided during the scanner test will help you solve
the problem.
When you select a setting, the options for that setting will appear. To get
help, press F1. To return all the settings to their default values, select
`Reset to factory settings.'
